Japan eSIM
A Japan eSIM from SimFuse costs from €3.19. Install it over Wi-Fi before you fly and it connects when you land, with no pocket Wi-Fi router to collect or return. The validity clock starts on that first connection in Japan, not when you pay.

What's included
- A QR code by email, usually within seconds and always within minutes.
- The clock starts when you first connect here, not when you pay. Install at home.
- What happens at your allowance is on each row: some plans pause, some slow down.
- Tethering spends the plan's own data. Each row says whether it allows it.
- A top-up adds data with nothing to reinstall. Each row says which plans take one, and each top-up states its own validity.
- Data only, unless a row states a call or SMS allowance. Calling apps work either way.
Not sure how much data?
Start with your recent daily phone use, then add room for train searches, walking directions, translation and photo uploads. Download maps and entertainment over Wi-Fi before long journeys. On an unlimited plan, the row states the daily full-speed allowance and the speed after it, and tethering spends that same allowance. If you fall short, a top-up adds data to the same eSIM on the plans that take one.
- 3 GB
- Maps, messages, light browsing
- 10 GB
- Plus social media and photo uploads
- 20 GB
- Plus streaming and video calls
- Unlimited
- Heavy daily use. The row states the full-speed allowance and the speed after it.

How do I check a Japan eSIM's network coverage?
Each plan names the carrier it runs on and the generation it supports. The honest limit is the one residents live with too: long tunnels, subway stretches and mountain trails still drop the signal. Save your Shinkansen booking and download walking maps before departure, especially if your trip includes routes such as the Kumano Kodo.

- No, data only
How fast is the Japan eSIM?
As fast as the local network is at that spot, which is the same connection residents get. Plans that carry 5G say so on the row, and fall back to 4G where 5G has not reached. Congestion, buildings and your own phone all move it, so no eSIM can promise a number. Unlimited plans state their daily full-speed allowance and the speed after it on the plan row.
How to get an eSIM for Japan
Install it at home over Wi-Fi, on an unlocked phone that supports eSIM. The validity clock does not start until the eSIM first connects to a Japanese network, so setting it up days early costs you nothing. On arrival, select it for mobile data. Narita publishes counter locations and individual opening hours for SIM sales and Wi-Fi rental; check your terminal if that is your backup. Japan's major international airports also provide free terminal Wi-Fi.
Japan SIM card, pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM: which should you buy?
Japan's tourism board lists airport SIM sales and pocket Wi-Fi rental among the alternatives to a travel eSIM. A physical SIM needs an unlocked phone with a suitable SIM slot. Pocket Wi-Fi can suit a group staying together or devices without eSIM support, but adds a router to charge and return under the rental company's terms. An eSIM is installed on your compatible phone. Check its hotspot rules before expecting it to connect a laptop or another traveller's phone.
Will you pay roaming charges in Japan?
Not on the SimFuse plan. You pay once, upfront, and nothing arrives afterwards. Your home SIM is the one to watch: calls, texts and data on that line still bill at your carrier's roaming rate, so turn off data roaming and automatic data switching before you land.
How much eSIM data do I need in Japan?
Start with your recent daily phone use, then add room for train searches, walking directions, translation and photo uploads. Download maps and entertainment over Wi-Fi before long journeys. On an unlimited plan, the row states the daily full-speed allowance and the speed after it, and tethering spends that same allowance. If you fall short, a top-up adds data to the same eSIM on the plans that take one.
Using data in Japan, what to know before you go
Keep booking details available offline
Save hotel addresses, train bookings and meeting points before leaving Wi-Fi. A working data plan does not guarantee a connection at every point on your journey.
Check any phone-number requirement
If a booking asks for a Japanese phone number or SMS verification, check that requirement before choosing a plan. A data-only eSIM does not supply a Japanese number, and included calling does not by itself establish which country's number you receive.
Use airport Wi-Fi as a setup backup
Japan's tourism board confirms free Wi-Fi in major international airport terminals. Keep your installation instructions accessible so you can check them before leaving the airport.

Japan eSIM, frequently asked questions
Can I make calls and send texts?Japan-specific
No. The plans listed here are data only, with no call or SMS allowance. You can use calling and messaging apps over data.
Do I need an eSIM for Japan?Japan-specific
No. Compare your home carrier's roaming, a local SIM and pocket Wi-Fi with a travel eSIM. Your phone must support the option you choose. An eSIM has no rental router to collect or return.
How much is an eSIM in Japan?Japan-specific
Japan eSIM plans from SimFuse start at EUR 3.19. Compare the live plan prices with their data and validity. Charges from your home SIM are separate, so check its roaming settings before travelling.
How does eSIM work in Japan?Japan-specific
An eSIM is a digital SIM installed on a compatible, unlocked phone. Follow the selected plan's activation instructions and choose it for mobile data in Japan. On a supported dual-SIM phone, your home line can remain available, subject to its own charges.
Should I choose an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi for Japan?Japan-specific
An eSIM suits a compatible phone without a separate router to carry. Pocket Wi-Fi can suit several devices travelling together or a phone without eSIM support. Compare the total rental cost and return rules with an eSIM's hotspot allowance.
Will I get a Japanese phone number with the eSIM?Japan-specific
Only if your selected plan explicitly includes a Japanese number. Data-only plans do not include one. If a plan includes calls or texts, check the number's country and its allowances before relying on it for bookings or SMS verification.
Can I use my Japan eSIM as a hotspot for a laptop?Japan-specific
Tethering spends the plan's own data, so a laptop draws on the same allowance your phone does. Each plan row says whether it allows tethering, and on an unlimited plan the row states the daily full-speed allowance and the speed after it.
What is the best eSIM for Japan?
Japan eSIM plans from SimFuse start at EUR 3.19. Pick on three things: the data you use in a day, how long you stay, and whether you need to tether. Each plan row below names its network, its validity and what happens when the allowance runs out, so the comparison is on one screen.
Which networks does the Japan eSIM use?
Japan plans run on KDDI (au), SoftBank, and NTT Docomo. Each plan names the carrier it uses and the generation it supports on its own row, because they differ from plan to plan. Your phone connects to that local network the way a resident's does, and the name it shows in the status bar is the carrier's.
Can I use the Japan eSIM as soon as I land?
Yes. Install it over Wi-Fi before you fly, then select it for mobile data when you land and it connects at the gate. The validity clock starts on that first connection in Japan, not when you paid, so buying ahead costs you nothing.
How much does a Japan eSIM cost?
Japan eSIM plans start at EUR 3.19, paid once and upfront, with no bill when you get home. Larger plans cost more in total and less per gigabyte. Every price on this page is live. Calls, texts and roaming on your home SIM stay on your home carrier's tariff.
Can I tether or hotspot in Japan?
Tethering draws on the plan's own data, so a hotspot spends the same gigabytes your phone does. Each Japan plan row says whether it allows tethering, and the few that cap it separately or forbid it say so there. Check it before you plan to work off a laptop.
Do I need to keep my home SIM while in Japan?
Keep it if you want your existing number reachable for calls and texts. On a dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and travel eSIM sit side by side. Calls and SMS included with your travel plan use its own line. Turn off data roaming and automatic data switching on your home line to control its roaming use.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile you install from a QR code, with no plastic card to insert. Buy a plan, install it over Wi-Fi before you fly, and it connects when you land. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so your own number keeps working. How eSIMs work, in full →
How does a travel eSIM work?
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you install on a compatible, unlocked phone. It connects to the networks covered by your chosen plan. Plans provide data; some also include calls and SMS. Check the plan’s allowances and activation instructions before you buy. How eSIMs work, in full →
Is my phone compatible with an eSIM?
Check your exact model and regional version in the compatibility guide, then look for 'Add eSIM' in your phone's settings. The phone also has to be carrier-unlocked. Brand and release year are not enough on their own, because some regional versions of an eSIM-capable model ship without it. Check your exact phone model →
When does my data plan start - at purchase or on arrival?
On arrival. The clock starts when the eSIM first connects to a network inside the plan's coverage, not when you pay and not when you install, which is what makes installing at home over Wi-Fi safe. Buy ahead if you like, and connect for the first time within a year of purchase.
