Switzerland and Andorra are outside EU roaming. Check your plan before a winter trip.
Your EU plan roams at home prices in 32 countries, and neither Switzerland nor Andorra is one of them. The UK and Switzerland plan free roaming, but nothing starts yet.

Switzerland and Andorra are not among the 32 countries in the EU's Roam Like at Home area. A phone that roams at home prices in Italy or France can be charged extra the moment it crosses into either.
That area is the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova, according to the European Commission. Its roaming brochure names Switzerland and Andorra, with Monaco and San Marino, as places where the EU roaming rules do not apply. The Commission adds that many operators extend their offers to countries outside the area anyway, so the price is your own carrier's decision and differs by plan. Business Traveller notes that several UK providers, including BT and O2, already offer surcharge-free roaming in European countries including Switzerland, subject to fair use policies. Check yours by name.
UK readers have a reason to expect change, but not yet. On 13 July 2026 the UK and Switzerland concluded negotiations on a trade agreement, and the UK government says both sides intend to include surcharge-free mobile roaming. No start date has been announced. The Swiss government aims to sign the agreement by the end of 2026, and each country then needs its own approval. Business Traveller reports that technical talks on how to deliver roaming are still going. If you are heading to Basel's Christmas market, which Basel Tourism dates from 26 November to 23 December 2026, your bill follows today's rules.
Andorra is the one that catches regional eSIM buyers out. On 26 October 2026 none of the Europe plans on SimFuse listed Andorra. Switzerland is covered by many Europe plans but not all: the plans named Europe & Turkey leave it out, and so does the European Union and United Kingdom region. Read the country list on the plan itself. Switzerland and Andorra each have their own SimFuse plans on 4G/LTE.
Borders add a second trap. Ofcom, the UK regulator, warns that near a border your phone might accidentally roam when the signal from the country across the border is stronger than the one you are in. Roaming can result in extra charges, and it can start in a country you have not entered. Ofcom names Northern Ireland and Turkey and Greece as examples, and the advice applies to any border region.
Before you go, do three things. Open your carrier's roaming page and look up Switzerland and Andorra by name. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM for any stretch you are unsure about. If your plan does not include them, a data eSIM fixes the cost up front: Switzerland plans were from EUR 1.19 on 26 October 2026, with hotspot allowed and top-ups in the app. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so your number and WhatsApp stay the same. The limit: a SimFuse eSIM is data only, so there is no Swiss number for calls. If your carrier already includes Switzerland, you may not need one.
The EU's Roam Like at Home area has 32 countries: the 27 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova. Switzerland and Andorra are not among them (European Commission, July 2026).
