# Unlimited eSIM plans, explained

An unlimited eSIM never runs out of data, but very few stay at full speed. Across the industry, most give you a set amount of fast data, per day or per plan, then slow down. Our own catalog is typical: of its 221 unlimited plans, 91% work that way.

## Five ways an unlimited eSIM plan can work

Every provider uses the same word for five different products. The shape of the speed over your trip is what tells them apart. Beside each kind, how many of our own plans work that way.

- [Daily full-speed allowance](#daily)

Fast up to a set amount each day, then slower until tomorrow.

    173 SimFuse plans

- [Full-speed allowance per plan](#allowance)

One pot of fast data for the trip, then slower until the end.

- [Steady speed, no allowance](#speedCapped)

No allowance to use up, one fixed speed throughout.

## Daily full-speed allowance

A daily full-speed allowance is the most common kind of unlimited eSIM plan. You get a fixed amount of full-speed data every day. Once it is used, the connection drops to a slower speed for the rest of that day, and the full-speed amount refills the next day.

A heavy day does not eat into tomorrow, which makes the daily kind forgiving. The catch is the other direction: data you do not use today does not carry over, and one long video call can use up a day's allowance by lunchtime.

### Across providers

How the terms put it

- 1 GB/day high-speed data
- 3 GB per day, then 512 kbps
- daily data resets every 24 hours

Typical

On daily unlimited eSIMs, the full-speed amount usually sits between 500 MB and 5 GB, most often 1 to 3 GB. After it, speeds of 128 kbps to about 1 Mbps are common.

Watch for

When the day resets. Some plans refill at midnight in the seller's own time zone rather than yours, others 24 hours after you first connected. And at 128 kbps even maps struggle.

## Full-speed allowance per plan

An unlimited eSIM with a full-speed allowance per plan gives you one larger pot of full-speed data for the whole plan, sometimes per week or per month instead. Use it at your own pace. When it is gone, the connection slows down for the rest of the plan, or on some plans stops until it is topped up.

Good when your days are uneven: a quiet beach week and two days of work on a laptop. Spend the pot too early and you are on the slower speed for the rest of the trip, so it pays to check your usage now and then.

### Across providers

How the terms put it

- Unlimited, fair use 50 GB
- after 30 GB, speed reduced to 1 Mbps
- 20 GB high speed per 7 days

Typical

On per-plan allowances, the pot is usually sized to the plan length, commonly tens of gigabytes on a month-long plan. After it, plans tend to slow to somewhere between 256 kbps and 1 Mbps.

Watch for

An allowance per week or per month inside a longer plan, which refills on its own schedule. And plans that pause the data when the pot is gone, so you have to top up to stay online.

## Steady speed, no allowance

A speed-capped unlimited eSIM has no full-speed allowance to use up. The plan runs at one fixed top speed from the first megabyte to the last, however much you use.

Nothing to track and nothing changes on day five, but you never get more than that speed. Whether it is enough depends on the figure: check it against what you plan to do, using the speed guide below.

### Across providers

How the terms put it

- Unlimited data at up to 3 Mbps
- maximum speed 10 Mbps
- unlimited, speed limited

Typical

On speed-capped unlimited eSIMs, caps commonly sit somewhere between 1 and 10 Mbps. The lower the cap, the cheaper the plan tends to be.

Watch for

“Up to” is a ceiling, not a promise: a busy network can give you less. And the cap is shared by every device on your hotspot, not given to each one.

## No cap at all

A truly uncapped unlimited eSIM has no allowance, no speed ceiling and no slowdown. It is the rare true unlimited plan: the speed you get is whatever the local network gives you.

Even here, the local network can slow heavy users down when a cell is busy, as it can with any mobile data. That is network management, not a plan limit.

### Across providers

How the terms put it

- Truly unlimited
- no throttling
- no fair use limit

Typical

Truly uncapped plans are uncommon in travel eSIMs. Where one exists, it is usually limited to a few destinations and priced above the other kinds.

Watch for

The small print, even here. A “no throttling” plan can still mention fair use, restrict hotspot, or put you behind local customers when a cell is busy.

Kind 5 of 5

## Fair use, limit not published

A fair-use unlimited eSIM with no published limit is sold as unlimited, but the amount of full-speed data and the speed after it are not published.

You will usually be slowed down at some point, you just cannot plan for when. If speed matters, choose a plan that states its numbers.

### Across providers

How the terms put it

- Unlimited\*, subject to fair use
- speed may be reduced after excessive use
- fair usage applies

Typical

Fair-use plans with no published limit are common across the market. They usually do slow down, after an amount of data that is never written down and can differ from one destination to the next.

Watch for

Ask the seller for the full-speed amount before you buy. If they cannot tell you, assume there is one, and that it may be lower than you hope.

## How hotspot works on an unlimited eSIM

Hotspot, or tethering, turns your phone into a Wi-Fi router for a laptop, a tablet or a friend's phone. On an unlimited eSIM it is often the part with the most small print. Networks can tell shared traffic apart from the phone's own, so a plan can give hotspot rules of its own, even when the phone itself is unlimited.

Across providers, you will meet five variations:

- ### Shared on the plan's data

On many unlimited eSIMs, hotspot is allowed and simply uses the plan's own data, under the same rules. If the plan has a daily full-speed amount, the laptop spends it too, and both slow down together.

    - Hotspot allowed
    - tethering supported
    - hotspot included

- ### A separate hotspot limit

Some unlimited eSIMs give hotspot its own, smaller amount, such as 2 GB a day or 5 GB for the whole plan, while the phone stays unlimited. Past it, hotspot either stops or drops to a slow speed, and the phone carries on as before.

    - Hotspot up to 2 GB
    - tethering limited to 1 GB per day
    - hotspot 5 GB, then 128 kbps

    - Hotspot up to 2 GB
    - Hotspot up to 3 GB
    - Hotspot up to 4 GB

- ### Hotspot at a slower speed

Some unlimited eSIMs allow hotspot with no amount to use up, but give shared devices a capped speed, often well below the phone's. Fine for email and messages on a laptop, slow for video calls and large downloads.

    - Hotspot at up to 1 Mbps
    - tethering speed limited
    - hotspot max 3 Mbps

    At SimFuse

    None

- ### No hotspot

Some unlimited eSIMs do not allow hotspot at all: the plan is for the phone only. Some networks block shared traffic outright, others treat it as a breach of the terms. If a laptop has to be online, rule these plans out.

    - Hotspot not supported
    - tethering not allowed
    - phone use only

    At SimFuse

    None

- ### Hotspot terms not published

Some unlimited eSIMs publish no hotspot terms at all. Hotspot may work, it may be blocked, or it may count against a limit nobody mentions. Ask before you buy if you are counting on it.

    - no mention of hotspot
    - fair use applies

    At SimFuse

    None

A laptop uses far more data than a phone: system updates, cloud backups and video calls all run in the background. On a plan with a daily or separate hotspot limit, pause automatic updates and syncing before you share.

## What to check before you buy an unlimited eSIM

- **How much full-speed data**The number that decides most of your experience. A plan that lists only “unlimited” and “fair use” does not tell you this.
- **Per day or per plan**A daily amount refills every day and does not carry over. A per-plan amount can be spent all at once.
- **The speed after it**Some plans slow to a speed that still handles maps and messages, others to one that barely loads a page. A few stop the data instead.
- **A ceiling from the start**Some plans cap the top speed even while you are within the full-speed amount. Look for “up to” in the terms.
- **Hotspot**Whether you can share the data with a laptop, and whether hotspot use has its own, smaller limit.
- **When the plan starts**Most travel eSIMs start counting days when they first connect at your destination, not when you buy them. Check before you buy early.

## What the slower speeds are good for

After the full-speed data is used, what still works depends on the speed the plan drops to. A rough guide, for one phone:

### Under 1 Mbps

**Works well:** Messaging, email, maps, voice calls over WhatsApp

**Struggles:** Video of any kind, large downloads, slow-loading websites

### 1 to 3 Mbps

**Works well:** Browsing, social media, music streaming, voice calls

**Struggles:** HD video, video calls in a group, sharing with a laptop

### 5 Mbps and up

**Works well:** Most things, including SD video and one-to-one video calls

**Struggles:** 4K video and big uploads

## Unlimited eSIM questions

Is an unlimited eSIM really unlimited?+

The data does not run out, but most plans slow down after a set amount of full-speed data, either each day or for the whole plan. Only a few have no limit at all. The full-speed amount and the speed after it are the two numbers to compare.

Can I use an unlimited eSIM as a hotspot for a laptop?+

Often, but check the plan. Across providers there are five variations: hotspot on the plan's own data under the same limits, a separate and smaller hotspot limit (such as 2 GB a day), hotspot at a slower speed, no hotspot at all, and plans that publish no hotspot terms. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so it spends a full-speed allowance quickly.

What happens when I use up the full-speed data?+

On most plans you stay online at a slower speed until the allowance refills (daily plans) or the plan ends. A few plans pause the data instead. Messaging and maps usually keep working at the slower speeds; video is the first thing to suffer.

Is a daily allowance better than one for the whole plan?+

A daily allowance suits steady use and protects the rest of your trip from one heavy day. One allowance for the whole plan suits uneven use, with a few heavy days and many light ones. Total the daily amount over your trip to compare the two fairly.

When does an unlimited plan start?+

Usually when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you pay or install it, so you can install it over Wi-Fi before you fly. SimFuse plans can wait up to 12 months for that first connection.

Should I get unlimited data or a fixed amount?+

Unlimited suits heavy daily use, video calls and hotspot for a laptop, when you would rather not watch a meter. If you mostly use maps and messaging, a fixed amount of data is often cheaper for the same trip.
